Bowers Metrology XT Series Bore Gages

Bore Gage Measurement #1

The recovering economy has forced manufacturers to reduce their workforce and steamline their manufacturing processes. CMM's are not as quick as a bore gage and plug gages lack the accuracy needed! The bore gage (being a perfect mix of speed and accuracy) is the perfect solution for bore measurements.

At Gaging.com we offer many different types of bore gages: cylinder bore gages, pistol grip style, micrometer style, hole gages, the list goes on! So how do you choose the right gage?

I will blog about the Pistol Grip style Bowers XT Extreme Bore Gages first (accuracy +/- .00015" for most ranges). They are an excellent choice and are the most popular bore gage type sold at Gaging.com. They boast both speed and accuracy and can be used in a number of applications with different measuring heads.

  • 3 point heads The standard head for this gage and are perfect for most applications. They have the ability to self-center which make measuring easy and they have the ability to measure a tri-lobed bore.
  • 2 point heads Generally special order and excellent for measuring ovality / out-of-roundness. A depth stop is often recommended to help the centralizing process.
  • Thread heads 3 point or 2 point but usually 3, available to measure various types of I.D. thread types including: UN, Metric, Acme, Whitworth, API, NPT, the list goes on. Always special order.
  • Spherical heads 3 point or 2 point, excellent for deep bore applications. The anvils are machined on a radius so the head can be moderately tilted in the bore and provide repeatable measurements. Whenever depth extensions are used a spherical head is generally recommended.
  • Groove heads/Ball Race 3 point or 2 point, the perfect solution for groove or ball race measuring. The anvils are cut so they are slightly smaller than the groove being measured for a perfect fit. Balls are often used as anvils on ball race heads.
  • Taper heads 3 point or 2 point, usually with ball contacts. Taper heads are generally outfitted with an adjustable depth stop so two measurements at precise depths can be taken to calculate taper angle
  • Slot heads 2 point, Self explanatory, can be used to many sizes of slots!
  • Spline heads 3 point or 2 point. Similar to a thread head in nature but generally fitted with balls or pins to measure various types of I.D. splines
